Klobuchar slams AT&T rate hike
AT&T recently sent a letter to customers informing them the early termination fees for smart phones such as the iPhone and Blackberries will soon double from $175 to $350. At the same time the fee on basic phones will decrease from $175 to $150. Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar called for Congress and the FCC to take action to protect consumers.

AT&T raises early termination fee on smartphones
A spokesman refused to comment beyond the contents of an open letter to customers, which said the early termination fees make it possible for AT&T to offer industry-leading phones below their full retail prices in exchange for a two-year service commitment. For example, a $199 Apple iPhone would cost $599 without a contract. AT&T has said that iPhone customers pay on average more than $90 in service fees each month.

AT&T: Before we launch LTE, we’ll upgrade our 3G network to support 14.4 Mbps
At a recent event in New York City, AT&T President and CEO John Stankey said that the company plans on rolling out a 14.4 Mbps upgrade to their 3G network by the end of the year. It’s not going to be done to the entire network, but it should be able to cover about 250 million people.

While the telecommunications giant has made progress in the New York market, the lack of a steady supply of cellular radio components and red tape over zoning issues has slowed its effort in San Francisco.

Before the original iPhone launched in 2007, USA Today reported that Apple and AT&T has entered a five-year carrier exclusivity agreement. That report was never verified, though, and the terms of the agreement between Apple and AT&T have long been the subject of debate.
