High Court's Health-Law Timing Clouded by 2012
A federal appeals court in Atlanta struck down last week the law's requirement for most Americans to carry health insurance. It conflicted with another appellate ruling upholding the law, and makes it a virtual certainty the Supreme Court will step in to resolve the dispute.

Scenarios: Deficit panel talks loom for Medicare, Medicaid
Few major structural changes are expected for the Medicare and Medicaid health insurance programs given the time constraints. The 12 committee members -- six Democrats and six Republicans -- also are unlikely to seek more than small-scale changes in spending, if any at all, to the initiatives created under the 2010 healthcare law signed by President Barack Obama, one of his key legislative achievements.

Employers adjust retiree drug plans as tax break ends

Appeals Court Rules Against Health Law Mandate
The divided three-judge panel of the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals struck down the so-called individual mandate, which is considered the centerpiece of the law, siding with 26 states that had sued to block the law. But the panel didn't go as far as a lower court that had invalidated the entire overhaul as unconstitutional.

Pollster: Medicare ‘Not Just A Seniors’ Issue’
efforts to change Medicare have traditionally drawn strong opposition, especially from sought-after senior citizen voters. So, as the 2012 election draws closer, will this conventional wisdom hold true? Or are deficit worries now making changes more palatable?

Tea Party groups see Medicare overhaul chance
Thousands of Tea Party movement activists are expected to descend this month on town hall meetings across key battleground states as part of an intensifying campaign ahead of the 2012 presidential and congressional elections. Their priority is a plan to slash Medicare costs proposed by House of Representatives Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, which could gain momentum now that a debt-limit deal between President Barack Obama and Congress has made potential Medicare cuts a centerpiece of the deficit debate.

Debt ceiling bill makes health care providers worry
The bill approved by the Senate and signed by President Barack Obama Tuesday might have saved the federal government from defaulting on its payments, but it is worrying health care providers. Medicare is high on the list of budget items that could suffer severe cuts.

Health industry fears double whammy in Medicare cuts
The deal reached by congressional leaders to raise the debt ceiling sets up a one-two punch in which healthcare industries will likely face two rounds of major Medicare cuts later this year. The agreement spares Medicare for the time being, but puts the program on the chopping block just ahead of a separate, must-pass healthcare measure that will require tens of billions of dollars in Medicare savings.
