Senate passes DB funding relief
The pension relief provisions, identical to provisions that the Senate previously approved in a tax and jobs bill last March, would allow Defined Benefit plans to stretch out amortization periods for investments losses for two of the years between 2008 and 2011, either over a period of up to 15 years or over a nine-year period, at the option of the plan sponsor. Current law requires plans to amortize their investment losses over seven years.

Corporate funding ratio slips in May to 82%
The funding ratio of the typical U.S. corporate pension plan declined 4.3 percentage points in May to 82%, largely because of falling stock values, according to an analysis by BNY Mellon Asset Management.

Because of the 2007-09 stock-market collapse and the inability of some recession-scarred companies to sufficiently fund their pension plans, the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation took over 129 plans last year -- a 74 percent jump from the year before. And 2010 is shaping up to be even worse.
